Dr. Anthony Ocana is a family doctor who listens. He has a special interest in mental health and addictions. He has a Bachelor’s in pharmacology, a Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition and a Medical Degree from the University of Toronto . He did his Family Medicine residency at the University of Calgary and has been in Family Practice in Vancouver, Canada since 1993. In 2005 he was board certified in Addiction Medicine and in 2007 he co-founded the NorthShore ADHD Clinic in West Vancouver.

He is one of a small handful of physicians in Canada who treats patients with ADHD and addictions. As a result, he has been able to collect data on the naturalistic progress of his patients as he has treated them with an eclectic mix of support, education, psychotherapy, advocacy and cutting edge psychopharmacology.

In May of 2009, he presented a paper to the 2nd International Congress on ADHD where he won first prize for his poster: Management of ADHD in patients with co-morbid cocaine addiction.

As one of the judges said to him, “This is something that every mayor of every major city in the world would want to know about. Good luck with your further research.”

So, while he still has not officially published this work, you can get a copy of the poster if you email him at: drocana@telus.net

It is very heartening to read your blog and know of your heart for people hurting with ADHD and addiction. My nephew really could use counselling and education this. He has been clean a few months but lacks good therapy at the present. The problem is we live in the Okanagan. Can you recommend someone close by or can we set up a series of appoints that could be spaced closely so he could spend a week in Vancouver? We do have family in Vancouver.

Thank you so much.

Hi Dennis,
I can’t really tell you much about benzo withdrawal. It’s more something you see in detox and I mostly work in the community

On Oct. 22, it will be your birthday!
So Happy Birthday in advance from me!
I just want to say a big Thank You for saving my life! You didn’t need my case file but you took it and worked with me for seven years until I reached a plateau of relative sanity. I used to be looking for bridges; now I look for stillness, joy and all those who embrace gentility!
Thank you again, I will never forget what you’ve done for me.

Paula, your note gave me goosebumps. I remember you well. You sure were a trooper. It did take years to find a treatment that worked. I’m so pleased for you. You are not just better, you are thriving!
